I tried google, looked at some parts diagrams, and still can’t figure it out. I thought maybe it was to hold a grocery bag, but it seems to fragile for that.

It does look like a grocery bag holder, or maybe part of some cargo net. I recently figured out that’s what a bunch of tiny little hooks were for in the back of my car. I use them all the time now to stop grocery bags from falling over and dumping their contents all over my car!

Holds the trunk floor up so you can have your hands free instead of holding it.

For holding a reflective triangle for roadside safety?

Looks like a pulldown assist?

I found this in the trunk of my 3 when I got it and wondering what the hell it was:
Unlike yours, mine was just sitting in the truck.
The part number on it is 51476974640. Which when googled leads to this:
My E90 has a slightly different part in it, probably for the same thing.

This is the correct answer.
(I have often wondered what this thing in my E92 is and I had to google it to arrive at this answer, but hey, now I know.)

You don’t know what that is? You are so screwed.

Believe they went in that little insert in the trunk.

My VW just has the floor handle designed so it gently hooks onto the weatherstripping. Sofa king elegant. Our 15-year-newer Honda just has a sheet of plywood covered by cheap carpet.

it’s a 500$ part

Get on my level, BMW pleb. Self supporting floor AND grocery hooks.

Is the ceiling of your trunk not upholstered? Pfft. Pleb car.

You guys get all the fancy stuff. Canadian versions have none of the power outlets, grocery hooks, etc. Not even an option apparently.

I thought you were onto something, but it doesn’t seem to work.
Floor won’t go past it, with the piece up or down.

Hmm, that’s what the BMW forum thread I read said it was for. Maybe it’s a poor design.

Flip down the tab in front of the trunk floor.

I tried that, you can’t.

If this was Porsche they would have charged you $10,000 for the pleasure of having something you have no idea what it does. With BMW they just charged you $100 for something that was going to break for no reason. Oh well.
